WORLD OCEAN DAY: POLAR BEAR SCULPTURE Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium: June 2008 I created a sculpture of a polar bear made from plastic grocery bags during World Ocean Day at the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium. My sculpture was made from reclaimed plastic grocery bags, but still just a fraction of the 1,460 bags used each year by the average American family of four. Visitors at the zoo helped to cut apart the bags and make long strips for me to weave into the sculpture. Over 500 BILLION plastic bags are produced each year and less than 1% are recycled! Many end up in the ocean and kill millions of birds, turtles, and other sea life every single year.
